A 90-minute supernatural thriller/horror film by Colombian Director Kim Caicedo & Editor Ben Johnson. Featuring Hernando Caicedo and Donnell E Smith, with Margaret Brammell.

  • In the midst of a desolate canoe trip two best friends, Huck & Guy, are forced to take shelter for the night. They quickly realize this pine-covered island seems to take on a life of its own and leaving might not be that simple.

  • This is a tale of caution about the desecration of mother earth by man, told through the perspective of two explorers who victimize themselves through the ignorance of their actions. Although there are supernatural elements to the story everything is grounded in realism.

  • The Pines is a feature film inspired by Algernon Blackwood’s short stories. Blackwood was a novelist and writer for the New York Times (1869) and his short stories revolved around the unseen world, eastern mysticism, and occultism. His work has served for inspiration for H.P. Lovecraft.

Directors Statement

Adventure comes to the adventurous. Mysterious things come to those who are looking; but the majority of people go past doors that are half open, thinking they are closed. "The Pines" is a film about the people who open those doors.

Growing up steeped in the lyrical and allegorical storytelling of my Colombian heritage, I found my cinematic journey deeply entwined with the tapestry of my ancestry. This cultural foundation laid the bedrock for my approach to storytelling, weaving narratives passed down from neighbor to neighbor, mother to mother, and now, from me to the world. These are cautionary tales, resonant with the wisdom of generations, serving as a profound meditation on the world that surrounds us.

"The Pines" is a revelation of nature's enigmatic depths, and a tribute to the heritage that guides us through its mysteries. It invites you to open those half-closed doors, to step boldly into the unknown, and to embrace the profound connections between our past and the wild, untamed world that beckons us with its secrets.
